Evaluation of Different Methods for Cone Resistance Assessment from Dynamic Penetration Tests

Dynamic penetration tests (DPT) are largely applied for soil in situ characterization. Cone resistance assessment from DPT isusually based on driving formulas derived from Newtonian approach. These are nevertheless often considered inaccurate and unable to fullydescribe dynamic penetration phenomenon. Wave equation approach provides a more rigorous analysis but remains less common for practicalreasons (requiring instrumentation and a more complex analysis). Historically, driving formulas derived from Newtonian approach are oftenpreferred for...

Reduction of uncertainty in the geotechnical diagnosis of railway tracks by data fusion

The degradation of the substructure plays a crucial role in the geometric deterioration of railway track. The condition of the substructure is evaluated by means of geotechnical diagnostics that consider various parameters, among which the geotechnical layer model stands out (Basye et al., 2020). The accuracy in the determination of this model is essential, since it significantly influences decision making and ensures the efficiency of the measures taken. In this...

Importance of geotechnical diagnosis in railway management A review

Railway tracks, like all civil works, experience degradation after being put into service, thus losing their initial design conditions. This degradation manifests itself mainly through misalignment and specific deterioration mechanisms of each component, which reduces safety and comfort during the passage of trains. In order to maintain their operational capabilities or prolong their service life, continuous monitoring, diagnosis and maintenance processes are carried out. These actions aim to restore the...

Proposed Methodology for Obtaining Ballast Layer Performance Indicators

Although ballast layer can be characterized by different parameters, the literature notes the absence of global performance indicators of ballast in ser-vice. This Article presents a methodology that proposed to obtain local perfor-mance indicators (based on the functions performed by the ballast layer) and global performance indicators (based on the combination of the above). The pro-posed methodology consists of three phases: (i) the first is the performance of a functional...

Site Characterization of a Restored Coastal Dune and Beach

Coastal beach and dune ecosystems are critically important for shoreline protection and significant resources have been allocated to their conservation. Dune vegetation is known to modify site response to wind, waves, and storms, but little focus has been given to understanding how belowground sediment structures enhance dune stability. A first step in addressing this knowledge gap is to determine optimal methods to measure subsurface sediment properties in onshore sandy environments....

Evaluation of the physical stability of leaching waste deposits for the closure stage

Leaching waste deposits are structures used for the storage of residues generated by hydrometallurgical processes forobtaining copper. Although the mechanical behavior of these types of deposits have historically remained adequate in seismicallyactive countries like Chile, it is necessary to evaluate – for closure and post-closure stages – long-term physical stability, potentialfailure mechanisms, slope stability, and seismically induced deformations. However, the physical and chemical characteristics ofsuch materials impedes geomechanical characterization via...

One key aspectof alternative compliance testing is that it supplies parameters that correlate directly to design, rather than index tests which have anadditional level of correlation and error margin. For example, laboratory CBR testing is a time-consuming test with a significantcorrelation error with design parameters, particularly in cohesive materials in a semi-arid environment. The device’s principle consists to measure wave propagationwithin the rod to each...

Probabilistic 3D modelling of shallow soil spatial variability using dynamic cone penetrometer results and a geostatistical method

Since soils are natural and non-homogeneous materials, spatial variability of their properties hasbeen recognised as one of the main sources of uncertainties affecting geotechnical analyses. However, soil testing is limited and the description and quantification of the resulting soilvariability still remain largely subjective in practice. In this paper, anapproach is proposed torationally evaluate the soil spatial variability using field data provided by a site investigationprogramme based on a lightweight dynamic cone...

Best Practice in Compaction QA for Pavement and Subgrade Materials (Year 1 – 2016 2017)

Currently, the acceptance of construction works (e.g. earthworkembankments, subgrade and pavement granular layers) by Australian roadregulatory bodies requires in situ density testing to be completed in orderthat a relative percentage of the laboratory-determined maximum dry densitycan be determined. Current earthworks specifications often rely on theassumption that there is a direct correlation between density and modulusparameters (i.e. the greater the density achieved, the higher the modulus ofthe compacted material). However, this...

Liquefaction potential of sand tailings dams evaluated using a probabilistic interpretation of estimated in-situ relative density

In Chile, sand tailings dams represent the most common deposits of mining residues. These structures present a potential risk in terms of mechanical instability due to their potential susceptibility to seismic liquefaction. In order to manage these risks, it is necessary to take a probabilistic approach, thus accounting for inherent variability of material properties. However, in practice, implementing such an approach is impeded by the difficulty of acquiring and managing...

Optimisation of in-situ dry density estimation

Nowadays, field experiments are mostly used to determine the resistance and settlements of a soilbefore building. The needed devices were heavy so they cannot be used in every situation. It is the reason whyGourves et al (1998) developed a light dynamic penetrometer called Panda. For this penetrometer, a standardizedhammer has to be blown on the head of the piston. For each blow, it measures the driving energy as well as...

Geotechnical auscultation of a French conventional railway track-bed for maintenance purposes

Prior to renewal or maintenance works on a railway track it is required to perform a proper investigation of the stiffness and thickness of each material constituting the track-bed. In practice, different techniques are used for this purpose. In this study, a comparison of two methods of determining the stiffness of track-bed materials (dynamic penetration and dynamic plate load) is made for a representative French conventional railway line, aiming at...

Penetration test in coarse granular material using Contact Dynamics Method

Field tests are widely used for soil characterization in geotechnical applications in spite of implementationdifficulties. The light penetrometer is a well-known testing tool for fine soils, but the physical interpretationof the output data in the case of coarse granular materials is far less evident. Indeed, the dataare considerably more sensitive in this case to various parameters such as fabric structure, particle shapesor the applied impact energy. In order to achieve...
