SOL SOLUTION sent two of its staff equipped with Panda® penetrometers to the Nam Theun 2 dam in Laos.
Sol Solution was already working together with EDF-CIH (Hydraulic Engineering centre), a division of EDF, studying several of its hydraulic structures in France. It was through this channel that the company was contacted for a project in Laos. Laos is a country in South- East Asia that is mountainous and has monsoons, with a high hydro-electrical potential.
The Nam Theun 2 Power Company (NTPC) appointed Sol Solution to carry out an environmental study on the large dam that it operates. The mission was to check the uniformity of the compactness of an embankment running alongside a river.

We sent two of our staff on site there for two weeks, along with Panda® penetrometers. They were assisted by two local technicians and in the space of nine days they carried out seventy five penetrometric tests to an average depth of eight metres in sandy-clay soil, in a tight regular grid pattern of three lines 2 metres apart. The data gathered permitted the resistance curves to be charted to reveal any zones that could have been vulnerable to leaks if they had lower resistance levels. The customer was given 2D and 3D models of the ground, but the adventure was not all plain sailing.
Laos does not use the ATA system, which is like a passport for equipment so that it may be imported temporarily, and several explanations had to be made to the local authorities to make the mission possible.

This was the first time that Sol Solution has exported its engineering services and this mission was the ideal opportunity to prove we were capable of working in a far off country with light equipment perfectly suited to local conditions and constraints.
